Tom Glover, Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer
1. What is your role at IPSO?
I am the senior policy and public affairs officer.
2. What brought you to IPSO?
As someone whose career began in the local press, I was excited at the opportunity to return to the sector, albeit this time through the prism of external affairs. It’s a workplace that regularly tackles difficult questions around freedom of expression and what constitutes the public interest and weighs them against protecting members of the public from invasions of privacy, harassment and other breaches of editorial standards.
3. What do you like about working at IPSO?
By working for the national press regulator, the sheer variety of issues that come through the door is extensive. Be it through potential complaints, contemporary issues or public and political discourse, every day is different and you are always learning, always thinking about how best to approach a given situation.
4. Why would you recommend IPSO to others?
Without a doubt it’s the people and working culture of IPSO: being part of a well-knit team of considerate, skilled and well-motivated colleagues doesn’t just lead to fair outcomes for both complainants and publishers – it makes for a healthy, happy and productive workplace culture.
5. Comments about IPSO’s benefits and EDI policy.
The benefits package is excellent and well put together, with an offer to rival quality packages from much larger organisations. EDI has been taken incredibly seriously by the entire team from executive level all the way down since before I started in post, with a number of initiatives ongoing to further improve how IPSO approaches this priority.
