IPSO pays tribute to Board member Lara Fielden

Lara worked with IPSO from its inception, starting in 2014 as a founding member of the Complaints Committee ruling on potential breaches of the Editors’ Code of Practice, and then moving to join IPSO’s Board in 2020. 

She was a Visiting Fellow and a Research Associate at the Reuters Institute and produced pioneering research on media regulation, including her 2011 publication Regulating for Trust in Journalism: Standards regulation in the age of blended media and her 2012 report Regulating the Press: A Comparative Study of International Press Councils. 

She was also a lay board member of the Bar Standards Board and of the General Medical Council. 

Chief Executive of IPSO Charlotte Dewar, who worked with Lara closely during her time on the Complaints Committee and the Board, said: 

 “Lara’s death is a great loss to IPSO and to the cause of independent regulation of the press. She will be sadly missed for her fierce intelligence and expertise, but also for her kindness and good humour.” 

 “Lara was deeply committed to freedom of expression and to IPSO’s role in upholding high editorial standards. She approached IPSO’s work with analytical rigor and with deep compassion for those affected by instances of misconduct. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of working with her.” 

“IPSO sends condolences to her family and friends.”
