Comment on Lord Faulks' work in the AIFC court

Comment on Lord Faulks’ work in the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) in response to article in Saturday's Observer.

The suggestion that Lord Faulks' work in the AIFC court somehow brings into question his commitment to freedom of expression is unfounded.

The AIFC court is separate and independent from Kazakhstan’s judicial system. It operates to the highest international standards, and its judges have global reputations for absolute impartiality and integrity. It is not unusual for senior lawyers to take overseas judicial appointments.

Lord Faulks is absolutely committed to preserving freedom of expression and his work for the AIFC is of limited scope and does not involve providing advice to Kazakhstan’s government or any media cases.
