Artificial intelligence
At the core of IPSO regulation is the principle of editorial responsibility. This means that regardless of the tools used, editors are accountable for demonstrating their compliance with the Editors’ Code of Practice
Human editorial oversight upholds journalistic standards, even as large language models and other AI tools become more prevalent.
Those regulated by IPSO are accountable for their content and must satisfy themselves that they are taking care over accuracy.
The standards they have agreed to meet set them apart from non-regulated titles and help to maintain trust and credibility with readers.
We continue to engage with publishers over how they use AI in a way that protects editorial standards and will use case studies to support journalists’ and public understanding of what this means in practical terms.
