Regulation by IPSO is a sign of commitment to high journalistic standards and public accountability

Membership of IPSO signals to readers that a publisher is willing to be held to account for its editorial content.

Any organisation that publishes editorial content in the UK or targets a publication at a UK audience can apply to be regulated by IPSO. Online only and small publishers are very welcome.

Why be regulated by IPSO?

IPSO regulation is a sign of high standards.

It tells your readers you are committed to the highest quality of journalism. Choosing to be accountable in this way is a sign of a professional and responsible publisher.

IPSO regulation is backed by the majority of UK publishers which means we regulate most of the UK’s digital and print titles.

What we do:

  • We support journalists ahead of publication with fast, practical advice and guidance – available 24/7 for urgent issues
  • Our guidance for journalists is informed by real case studies and deep experience
  • We give training and workshops on challenging issues and difficult editorial decision-making
  • We are on hand to provide help and advice on how to handle complaints received after publication in an effective, proportionate way
  • We offer an arbitration service as a low-cost means to resolve potential breaches of legal rights, not just complaints.

The IPSO Mark is used by IPSO members as a sign of quality, trusted, regulated journalism.

IPSO Mark
The IPSO Mark demonstrates that content is distinguishable. It’s a badge of accountability, professionalism, and integrity.

What’s required?

  • A five-year membership contract with transparent terms
  • Commitment to the Editors’ Code of Practice
  • An effective internal complaints process and agreement to abide by the decisions of the Complaints Committee
  • An annual statement on editorial standards, complaints handling, training, and details of any upheld complaints

How much does it cost?

The fee for regulation by IPSO starts from a little over £250 a year.

The job of setting and collecting fees to fund IPSO regulation is done by a separate organisation set up for the purpose called the Regulatory Funding Company. This arms’ length approach protects our independence.
