IPSO appoints new members to its Complaints Committee

IPSO has appointed Manuela Grayson and Bulbul Basu as lay members of its Complaints Committee.

The Complaints Committee rules on complaints to IPSO that the Editors’ Code of Practice has been breached and has the power to determine the nature, extent, and placement of remedies in cases where it upholds a complaint.

Bulbul Basu is a qualified accountant and has over 20 years' experience working within the financial services industry in London.  During this time, she has worked in many different roles in different institutions and has an expert understanding of controls, corporate governance, and regulatory affairs within the financial services context.

Manuela Grayson is a solicitor and is a Legally Qualified Chair for a number of professional regulatory tribunals including the General Pharmaceutical Council and the Taxation Disciplinary Board, and an Adjudication Chair of fitness to practise committees for Social Work England. Previously she had a career as a senior broadcast journalist for the BBC, working on programmes including Panorama and Correspondent, and was an editorial adviser to the BBC Trust. She is a governor of an Inner-London secondary school, and Chair of Trustees for a Law Centre.

IPSO Chairman Lord Faulks KC welcomed the new appointments:

“Congratulations to Manuela Grayson and Bulbul Basu on their appointments to IPSO’s Complaints Committee. Along with other members, they will have a crucial role in promoting high editorial standards and providing accountability for standards failures.”

Members of the Complaints Committee are appointed for a term of three years, which is renewable once.

“We welcome Manuela and Bulbul to the Committee. They will each bring a valuable and distinctive perspective to questions that come before the Committee on how to apply the Editors’ Code to the many different types of journalism practiced by our regulated titles,” said Charlotte Dewar, IPSO’s Chief Executive.
